The Hellenic Society for the Study and Research of Ageing (HeSSRA) is a scientific non-profit corporation.

HeSSRA was founded in April 2014, despite Geriatrics not yet being recognized as specialty in Greece; at a time when the appreciation of the problems of older people and the need for improvement of quality of life are increasing.

HeSSRA aims, capitalizing on President Athanasios Benetos' continuous presence and extensive activity (from 2003 to today), to educate health professionals on issues associated with aging through the organization of seminars, symposia, workshops and international postgraduate courses in Greece.  The society's members are physicians of various specialties, Internists, Endocrinologists, General Practitioners, Physiatrist, Neurologists, Urologists, Dietitians-Nutritionists, Biologists and other scientists in fields related to Aging.

Through the efforts of its President from 2003 and on, HESSRA has organized collaborative events in Greece with greek associations as the Hellenic Society of General Medicine (ELEGIA), the Hellenic Society for Hypertension (EEY) and the Hellenic Society of Physical and Rehabilitation Medicine (EEFIAp) but also International and European Associations such as the European Geriatric Medicine Society (EuGMS), the International Association of Gerontology and Geriatrics (IAGG) and the Cyrpus Society of General Medicine,  highlighting new and important trends to follow in the prevention of Aging based on european criteria.

The integration process of HeSSRA into the European Geriatric Medicine Society (EuGMS) as a key member has already begun, and HeSSRA aspires to be included among the members of the International Association of Gerontology and Geriatrics (IAGG) and the International Society of Vascular Health and Aging (ISVH).

The Hellenic Society for the Study and Research of Aging conducted its first research study, analyzing and recording hypertension and its consequences in the aging population of aging monks on Mount Athos. Results of the study can be seen here. The second research and study is already planned to be conducted during 2018.

Last but not least, HeSSRA, as a founding member of the Hellenic Consortium for Geriatric Medicine is proud to have been awarded the hosting of the 16th EuGMS Congress, to be held in Athens on October 2020.

The bidding procedure took place in Nice, France on September 20th, 2017, during the 13th EuGMS Congress, where the greek bid was presented by members of the Consortium in competition with Israelish and Suedish candidancies.  The central theme of the presentation was the creation of synergies between Northern and Southern European countries in order to improve geriatrics throughout europe.  Furthermore, our bid placed additional emphasis on the outreach of EuGMS to countries in Eastern Europe, North Africa and the Middle East.
